Our practice
Littlefield is situated at the heart of Grimsby, a town well known for its past history as the world’s premier fishing port. The fishing industry has been in a steady decline since the ‘Cod Wars’ of the 1970s and no longer has its own trawler fleet. Grimsby is now recognised as the ‘food town’ of Europe, processing and freezing more food than anywhere else in the Continent, providing jobs lost through the demise of the fishing industry. Our premises are found in the Freshney Green Primary Care Centre, a state of the art building completed in 2009 by Assura. Freshey Green was the result of the combined efforts between Care Trust Plus, Littlefield and two other local practices, Field House and Woodford Medical Centres (which have now merged into Woodfield Medical Centre), to bring into one building an array of services and provide the best possible care for its patients.
The practice serves a population of 5,500 patients and the building itself serves 32,000 people, around a fifth of the total population of North East Lincolnshire. The premises house a number of different health professionals including district nurses, and primary care mental-health professionals. Other services available include physiotherapy, podiatry, dentistry, pharmacy, minor-operations suite, smoking cessation, audiology and ultrasound.
We are part of the Freshney Pelham Primary Care Network (PCN), which is formed by Littlefield, Woodfield Medical Centre and Pelham Medical Group. Our PCN also runs Freshney Pelham Care Ltd which employ the District Nurses serving our population, as well as the clinical team noted below.
All the practices in our PCN use EMIS Web as the clinical system of choice.
The whole team welcomes external evaluation as a way of keeping us on ‘our toes’ and measuring our performance against nationally set standards. We are constantly looking at ways to improve the services to our Patients and actively involve our well established Patient Participation group in service development and changes to systems.
We are actively involved in the Quality and Outcome Framework and have signed up to a whole range of additional National, Local and Direct Enhanced Services.
Training Practice
Littlefield Surgery is a certified training facility for doctors specialising in general practice. We support doctors in various stages of training, including GP Registrars, Foundation Year 2 doctors, and Year 5 students from the Hull York Medical School (HYMS).
Roles and Responsibilities:
- GP Registrar: These doctors have extensive experience in hospitals and are now expanding their skills to become GPs.
- Foundation Year 2 (FY2): Recently qualified doctors who are exploring potential specialities. They spend four months at our practice as part of their Foundation training.
- HYMS Year 5: Medical students in their final year of training.
Our practice has several experienced GPs who are certified trainers, qualified to supervise and support trainee doctors in a clinical setting.
What to Expect During an Appointment with a Trainee Doctor:
- Supervision: Each trainee is assigned a dedicated GP who acts as their trainer within the practice.
- Debriefing: Trainees have regular debrief sessions with a senior GP after every clinic to ensure the highest standards of care.
- Quality of Care: GP Registrars provide a level of service comparable to that of any fully qualified GP. If you have concerns, please discuss them with our staff.
- Consultation Recordings: GP Registrars may be assessed on their consultation skills through recorded sessions. You may be asked to consent to this process. If you agree, you’ll be asked to sign a consent form at reception. The recordings are strictly for educational purposes. If your consultation is being recorded without prior consent, please notify the doctor immediately.
- HYMS Year 5 Students: These students receive more in-depth guidance. Their consultations may be longer, and a GP will join them in the latter part of the appointment.
- Observing Students: HYMS Year 3 and nursing students also observe consultations to enhance their learning. If a student is present during your appointment, you’ll be introduced to them and asked if you’re comfortable with their attendance.
Your cooperation in helping train the next generation of doctors is greatly appreciated, and we thank you for supporting their learning journey.
